Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel was born 2 March 1989. Emmanuel began her acting career with theater in the latter part of the 1990s. Later she was invited to appear in several West End productions including The Lion King. In 2006, she began her screen career in the role of Sasha Valentine in soap opera Hollyoaks, after which she played in a variety of British television shows, until her first film appearance in Twenty8k.Emmanuel was recognized internationally for her role as Missandei in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones (2013-2019), and continued her career with supporting roles in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and its sequel Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), the Fast & Furious films Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), as well as F9 (2021) as well as she was in Army of Thieves (2021).Emmanuel was born on the 2nd of March, 1989 in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England. Her mother is Dominican, and her father is half-Saint Lucian and half English descent. Her older brother is also a member of the family. Emmanuel remembered her mother's first notice of her passion for acting and the desire to be an actress when she was a student at St Hilda's School. This school closed in 2014 , and it was renamed the Westcliff High School. She claimed that she first noticed her love for acting when she was three years old. Her mother then encouraged her to attend singing, dancing, as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King, Young Nala was cast as the role of Young Nala. In the following year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. She shared with Jimmy Kimmel that she learned about the character while working as an assistant at a clothing store. In the year 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to an ongoing cast member in the series. Missandei was the only prominent character that was a woman of colour on the show. And her death scene, which took place whilst she was in chains was not popular with viewers because it was seen as an example of savagery and conjuring an image of slavery.Emmanuel later said to The Guardian: The reaction to the death of Missandei was large because she was the only one. I think a lot of those who felt marginalized or excluded had connected with her, or felt that she represented them particularly women of color. It was incredibly difficult for people to let her disappear, particularly when it happened in the manner that she did. This is how they plan to remember the sole woman in their own race.
